The Global Plant Breeding Clinic (GPBC) is an electronically-based center to provide plant breeders and other professionals a point of contact to obtain information and identify resources needed for crop genetic improvement. It helps identify resources from centers of expertise, prepare and review grant proposals, answer questions about day-to-day breeding activities, access plant genetic resources and appropriate new technology or just have ongoing dialogue with other plant breeders or related professionals. In summary, the GPBC works to supplement whatever it takes for a plant breeder succeed.
The Developer and Curator of the Global Plant Breeding Clinic is Dr. Fred Bliss, plant breeder of Seminis Vegetable Seeds and the University of California-Davis, and member of the GIPB supporting team. Click here to send a message to the curator.
Activities of the Global Plant Breeding Clinic include: The Plant Breeding Electronic Journal Club is a community that meets electronically to critically evaluate plant breeding and related articles in the scientific literature. It will help young professionals and students become more familiar with the essential (classical) and current plant breeding literature. Also, it will help improve skills of understanding and debating current topics of interest to plant breeding and related fields, intellectually stimulating and professionally rewarding exchange with colleagues from around the world. Click here to enter the Plant Breeding Journal Club.
Plant Breeding Questions & Answers is envisioned as the primary activity of the Global Plant Breeding Clinic. Breeders and other professionals submit questions to be answered through accessible electronic links. The GPBC will promote the use of electronic means of sharing information and forums on key topics of interest to plant breeding and related innovation fields. Priority will be given to versatile and inexpensive, web-based tools tailored for communication, dialogue and collaboration. Click here for information on the Plant Breeding Q&A Portal.
Professional Growth Network: The Global Plant Breeding Clinic is developing a professional growth program to support and encourage plant breeder's personal development. The Professional Growth Network is envisioned as a mechanism to facilitate establishment of: 1) voluntary, requested mentor-mentee relationships for junior breeders wishing to grow through a defined mentorship relationship; 2) voluntary Breeder2Breeder links which may involve two or more breeders with common interests and goals. More information about the GPBC Professional Growth Network.
Plant Breeding Blogs is an initiative to encourage breeders to speak their minds and share their views on important subjects, especially those related to the future of plant breeding. By stimulating breeders to open and maintain their web logs, GIPB aims to offer a permanent space for debate, interaction and exchange. Speak Up! is meant not only to encourage open communication and interaction in new ways, but also to provide breeders with new and concrete options of forward thinking and action. More information on Plant Breeding Blogs. Plant Breeding Forum-L is an initiative to create a means for plant breeders and those in related fields to interact easily on a regular and informal basis, with inquiry, discussion and debate. The users of PBForum-L should include public and private-sector plant breeders, students, teachers, research administrators, the seed industry, policy-makers, farmers, and others.
