There is no systematic global effort to build capacity over the medium- and longer-term to effectively train new scientists and technicians in developing countries in plant breeding and pre-breeding and in crop improvement, neither to upgrade the skills in the use of new technologies and modern facilities for scientists already working. GIPB partners, including CGIAR centers, universities and the private sector in both developed and developing countries, possess capabilities for training relative to the utilization of plant genetic resources to ensure food security and sustainable development. Visits and scientific exchanges between scientists from among GIPB partners, the organization of workshops, short courses and consortia, and formal degree programmes at MSc and PhD levels could be used to effectively train new scientists in developing countries and upgrade the skills in new technologies, and also provide the essential career support to trainees to ensure sustainability.
